A Strange Cluster: No Clues

It seems to me that there is no overwhelming evidence that clustering on the chromosome is almost always meaningful when proximity is maintained for more than just a few diverse genomes. However, sometimes one does encounter clusters for which no functional relationships between members of the cluster spring to mind. This cluster is one of those.

The cluster between the following genes is conserved through numerous genomes:

  1. LSU ribosomal protein L25p,
  2. Peptidyl-tRNA hydrolase (EC 3.1.1.29), and
  3. Ribose-phosphate pyrophosphokinase (EC 2.7.6.1).

There is more to the cluster than just these three, but those three offer a pretty difficult puzzle by themselves.
